Answer: Numerous studies have shown that the more the top teeth stick out over the lowers, the more likely it is that an accident involving the face will result in teeth being involved, and one or more teeth will be fractured. Also alarming is the fact that the farther the upper teeth protrude (stick out) beyond the lowers, the more severe the damage may be. This condition is often caused by finger or thumb habits, unfavorable growth patterns, or even an impaired ability to breathe through the nose. We recommend that you confer with your family dentist. While orthodontic treatment is definitely indicated, a referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist or allergist might also be necessary.
